Bendtner fine and suspension shows the hypocrisy of football

Arsenal and Denmark’s Nicklas Bendtner was fined €100,000  (~$125,797) and suspended for one World Cup Qualification match for improper conduct. This improper conduct in this case was revealing a pair of bookmaker-sponsored underwear (Paddy Power) after scoring his second goal against Portugal in their EURO 2012 match.

Bendtner was also reprimanded by the Danish Football Association (DBU) and ordered to wear those the bookmaker-sponsored underwear in Denmark’s final group stage match against Germany.

Following the opening of disciplinary proceedings concerning the improper conduct of Denmark’s Nicklas Bendtner at the UEFA EURO 2012 Group B match against Portugal in Lviv on Wednesday 13 June, the UEFA Control and Disciplinary Body has decided to suspend the player for one competitive fixture.

This suspension applies to the next 2014 FIFA World Cup match, including the qualifying competition, for which Bendtner is eligible. The player has also been fined €100,000. An appeal can be lodged against this decision within three days of the dispatch of the full written decision.

During this same tournament, the Croatian Football Federation (HNS) was fined €25,000 ($31,449) for throwing fireworks and missiles and invading the pitch during their group stage match against Ireland. In addition, the Russian Football Union was fined €125,000 ($150,054) for stadium violence after their group stage match against the Czech Republic.

FC Porto was fined £16,700 in February after their fans were cited for racial abuse of Mario Balotelli– in this case being monkey chants.

UEFA has shown yet again that the most important thing to them is money. Bendtner’s hefty fine and suspension was because he advertised an unapproved sponsor when he showed his bookmaker sponsored underwear.

Although UEFA claims differently, for them it’s all about the money.

Russia may face points deduction

Russia will be docked six points in qualifying for the next European Championship if their fans step out of line again after disturbances at their opening Euro 2012 game against the Czech Republic last Friday, UEFA said.

The charges against Russia’s fans included setting off and throwing fireworks and the display of illicit banners at the match in Wroclaw which Dick Advocaat‘s team won 4-1.

Russian and Polish fans were also involved in the worst violence of the tournament around the second group game in Warsaw on Tuesday.

Police, who feared trouble at the Euro 2012 game due to uneasy relations between the two countries, detained 184 people, 156 of them Poles, 25 Russians, and three other foreign fans.

Russia, who drew 1-1 with Poland, top Group A on four points with the Czech Republic second on three.

UEFA opened another disciplinary case against the Russian FA on Wednesday following incidents inside the stadium in Tuesday’s game with the Poles, but said it would not have any impact on the suspended sanction related to the Wroclaw match.

Russia again face a hearing for setting off and throwing fireworks, displaying illicit banners and the invasion of the pitch by a supporter, while the Polish Football Association will answer a charge of setting off fireworks.

“Last night’s incidents do not have any impact on the probation period for the sanction imposed on the RFS following the incidents at their first match against the Czech Republic in Wroclaw. This means the six-point deduction is still currently suspended,” UEFA said.

UEFA’s Control and Disciplinary Body will deal with both cases on Sunday.

And Racism Persists in Football

UEFA have responded to Manchester City‘s claims that two of their players were racially abused during the Europa League match at Porto by opening disciplinary proceedings against the Portuguese club.

City lodged a written complaint with European football‘s governing body after their 2-1 victory at the Estadio Dragao last week.

There were suspected outbreaks of monkey chanting aimed at Mario Balotelli and Yaya Toure during last Thursday’s match. It appeared most noticeable when Balotelli was substituted 12 minutes from the end.

UEFA announced in a statement: “Following a complaint lodged by Manchester City FC, UEFA has today opened disciplinary proceedings against FC Porto for the improper conduct of supporters (article 11 bis of the UEFA disciplinary regulations) during their UEFA Europa League round of 32 first-leg match against Manchester City FC last week.

“The UEFA control and disciplinary body will deal with the case on March 29.”
